Maggie (Champion) Lucas

Maggie was born on February 11, 1869 At Heathville, Jefferson County, PA.

She was left an orphan in 1879. She attended the Dayton Soldiers' Orphans School until she reached the age of 16. She is listed as a "Sixteener" in the 1884 Report.

She married George Benjamin "Ben" McClellan Lucas in 1887.


Maggie and Ben had eight children:

Etta May "Tet or Gay"  1888-1981

Frederick "Fred" L.  1890-1913

Mary Virginia  1892-1975

Alvin "Alvy" Bryan  1897-1965

Preston Leroy  1902-1954

Harold Glenn  1905-1990

Wilma Jean  1908-1980

Theodore George  1913-1992


Mark Weitzel, a great-grandson of Maggie and Ben, recalls hearing a few tidbits about Maggie's life at the Orphans School from his mother, Virginia:  Maggie learned to sew, crochet and quilt at the school.

Also, the religious training at the school had a deep impact on Maggie. She & her husband, Ben, were charter members of the Leasure Run Church and very active in Sunday School and Choir.

Maggie died on February 7, 1984 in Shannondale, Clarion County, PA. She is buried in Salem Cemetery, Frogtown, Clarion County, PA.
